Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 1,000 - 2,600 m.
Peru.
Central Andes of Peru, from southern Amazonas south to Junín; a few specimens from as far southern as Ayacucho might refer to present species.

Scytalopus femoralis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Rufous-vented Tapaculo (Scytalopus femoralis), White-crowned Tapaculo (Scytalopus atratus), Bolivian Tapaculo (Scytalopus bolivianus), Santa Marta Tapaculo (Scytalopus sanctaemartae) and Long-tailed Tapaculo (Scytalopus micropterus) following SACC (2005).
