Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, high altitude shrubland. From 1,250 - 2,300 m.
Colombia (B), Ecuador (B), Peru (B).

Colombia in upper Magdalena Valley, and from Cundinamarca southern on Amazonian slope to extreme northern Peru.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Scytalopus femoralis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Rufous-vented Tapaculo (Scytalopus femoralis), White-crowned Tapaculo (Scytalopus atratus), Bolivian Tapaculo (Scytalopus bolivianus), Santa Marta Tapaculo (Scytalopus sanctaemartae) and Long-tailed Tapaculo (Scytalopus micropterus) following SACC (2005).
Formerly treated as a subspecies of Rufous-vented Tapaculo (Scytalopus femoralis). The two taxa are, however, now regarded as sister-species.
