Subspecies
Apparently most closely related to Streak-headed Woodcreeper (Lepidocolaptes souleyetii) and to Northern Spot-crowned Woodcreeper (Lepidocolaptes affinis) and Montane Woodcreeper (Lepidocolaptes lacrymiger). However, one study based on morphology suggested that it may be the sister to Narrow-billed Woodcreeper (Lepidocolaptes angustirostris) and White-striped Woodcreeper (Lepidocolaptes leucogaster). Nominate subspecies is morphologically distinct, with remaining subspecies (the "fuscicapillus group") recognized by some authors as a separate species. Assessment of geographical variation complicated, however, by lack of concordance between morphology and vocalizations in southern Amazonia; layardi and fuscicapillus similar morphologically, but with strikingly different vocalizations; intermediates between subspecies layardi and madeirae occur in southern Amazonian Brazil (Serra do Cachimbo, on eastern bank of R Tapajós in north-central Mato Grosso).

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • albolineatus (Lafresnaye, 1846)   -  North-eastern Amazonia, in eastern Venezuela (north-eastern Bolívar; sight record from north-eastern Monagas), the Guianas and northern Brazil (north of Amazon R from R Branco and R Negro east to Amapá).
  • duidae J. T. Zimmer, 1934   -  North-western Amazonia, in eastern Colombia (Vaupés), southern Venezuela (western and southern Bolívar, Amazonas) and north-western Brazil (west of R Negro, north of R Solimíµes). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Duida Woodcreeper (Lepidocolaptes duidae).
  • fuscicapillus (Pelzeln, 1868)   -  South-western Amazonia, from eastern Ecuador and eastern Peru east to southern Amazonian Brazil (east to R Madeira) and south to northern and eastern Bolivia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Dusky-capped Woodcreeper (Lepidocolaptes fuscicapillus).
  • madeirae (Chapman, 1919)   -  South-central Amazonian Brazil, south of Amazon (R Madeira east to R Tapajós, south to south-western Mato Grosso).
  • layardi (P. L. Sclater, 1873)   -  South-eastern Amazonian Brazil, south of Amazon, from R Tapajós east to north-western Maranhío and south to eastern Mato Grosso and Tocantins. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Layard's Woodcreeper (Lepidocolaptes layardi).
