Subspecies
Appears to be closely related to Northern Spot-crowned Woodcreeper (Lepidocolaptes affinis), Montane Woodcreeper (Lepidocolaptes lacrymiger) and Lineated Woodcreeper (Lepidocolaptes albolineatus). Subspecies lineaticeps, littoralis and uaireni poorly differentiated from one another, whereas nominate and esmeraldae appear to represent extremes in a cline. Birds from south-eastern Mexico to northern Honduras often recognized as subspecies insiginis, said to differ from compressus in deeper buff throat and broader streaking both above and below, but neither character seems geographically related and considered better merged with latter. Variation in Middle America most evident as cline of decreasing size from north to south.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • guerrerensis van Rossem, 1939   -  Western Mexico (Sierra Madre del Sur, in Guerrero and south-western Oaxaca).
  • compressus (Cabanis, 1861)   -  Lowlands on both slopes of Middle America from southern Mexico (southern Veracruz, south-western Campeche, south-western Chiapas) south to western Panama (eastern Chiriquí, western Bocas del Toro).
  • lineaticeps (Lafresnaye, 1850)   -  Central and eastern Panama (eastern from Canal Zone), northern and eastern Colombia (except Santa Marta region) and western Venezuela (Táchira, western Mérida, extreme western Barinas).
  • littoralis (Hartert & Goodson, 1917)   -  North-western Colombia (Santa Marta region, Atlántico), northern and central Venezuela (north-western Zulia east to Sucre, south to Orinoco region), Guyana and extreme northern Brazil (upper R Branco). Also Trinidad.
  • uaireni Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1950   -  Known only from type locality on R Uairén, in extreme south-eastern Venezuela (south-eastern Bolívar).
  • esmeraldae Chapman, 1923   -  South-western Colombia (Nariño) and western Ecuador (south through most of El Oro).
  • souleyetii (Des Murs, 1849)   -  South-western Ecuador (southern El Oro, Loja) and north-western Peru (south to Lambayeque).
