Subspecies
Lepidocolaptes affinis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Northern Spot-crowned Woodcreeper (Lepidocolaptes affinis) and Montane Woodcreeper (Lepidocolaptes lacrymiger) following SACC (2005).

Forms a superspecies with Montane Woodcreeper (Lepidocolaptes lacrymiger), and treated as conspecific by most authors; separated on basis of plumage and vocal differences, although detailed analysis of vocal characters yet to be undertaken.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

lignicida (Bangs & Penard, TE, 1919) - North-eastern Mexico (south-western Tamaulipas, eastern San Luis Potos��).
affinis (Lafresnaye, 1839) - Both Atlantic and Pacific slopes of Middle America, from eastern and southern Mexico (extreme south-eastern San Luis Potos��, western Guerrero) south to northern Nicaragua.
neglectus (Ridgway, 1909) - Mountains of Costa Rica and western Panama (Chiriqu�� Highlands). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Southern Spot-crowned Woodcreeper (Lepidocolaptes neglectus).
