Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Northern Spot-crowned Woodcreeper (Lepidocolaptes affinis), and treated as conspecific by most recent authors. Separated on grounds of differences in plumage and voice, although vocal characters yet to be analysed in detail. Subspecies can be divided into two groups based on morphology: northern "lacrymiger group", also including sneiderni (which intergrades with nominate in Bogotá region of Colombia), sanctaemartae and lafresnayi; and southern "warscewiczi group", also including weakly differentiated subspecies aequatorialis, carabayae, bolivianus and frigidus.
The following 9 subspecies are recognised:
sanctaemartae (Chapman, 1912) - Northern Colombia (Santa Marta region).
lacrymiger (Des Murs, 1849) - Eastern Andes of Colombia (from Norte de Santander south to Bogotá). Also adjacent western Venezuela (Perijá Mts, Mérida Andes).
lafresnayi (Cabanis & Heine, 1860) - Coastal cordillera of northern Venezuela (Carabobo east to Miranda, and south-western Sucre; recent sight record from Lara probably involved this race).
sneiderni Meyer de Schauensee, 1945 - Colombia southern from Bogotá (except Nariño), on both slopes of western and central Andes and western slope of eastern range, also upper Cauca and Magdalena Valleys.
frigidus Meyer de Schauensee, 1951 - Southern Colombia (eastern Andean slopes in Nariño).
aequatorialis (Ménégaux, 1912) - Pacific slope of Andes in Nariño (south-western Colombia), both slopes in Ecuador (in west, south to Loja); unclear whether birds on western Slope in north-western Peru refer to aequatorialis or warscewiczi.
warscewiczi (Cabanis & Heine, 1860) - Eastern slope of Andes in extreme south-eastern Ecuador and northern and central Peru (Cajamarca and Amazonas south to Junín).
carabayae Hellmayr, 1920 - Eastern slope of Andes in south-eastern Peru (Cuzco, Puno).
bolivianus (Chapman, 1919) - Eastern slope of Andes in north-eastern and central Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba, western Santa Cruz).
