Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Grey-winged Trumpeter (Psophia crepitans) and Green-winged Trumpeter (Psophia viridis) and sometimes treated as conspecific with Grey-winged Trumpeter (Psophia crepitans). Alternatively, subspecies ochroptera transferred to that species, because distribution appears more compatible with that of Grey-winged Trumpeter (Psophia crepitans), and plumage pattern intermediate. However, apparent lack of interbreeding in areas of overlap between subspecies ochroptera of White-winged Trumpeter (Psophia leucoptera) and subspecies napensis of Grey-winged Trumpeter (Psophia crepitans) indicates that these two subspecies probably belong to separate species.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
ochroptera von Pelzeln, 1857 - North-western Brazil (north of R Amazon/Solimões and west of R Negro). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Ochre-winged Trumpeter (Psophia ochroptera).
leucoptera Spix, 1825 - Eastern Peru, central-western Brazil (generally south of R Amazon/Solimões and west of R Madeira) and north-eastern Bolivia.
