Subspecies
Forms superspecies with White-winged Trumpeter (Psophia leucoptera) and Green-winged Trumpeter (Psophia viridis). Present species sometimes treated as conspecific with White-winged Trumpeter (Psophia leucoptera). Alternatively, considered to include subspecies ochroptera of White-winged Trumpeter (Psophia leucoptera), because distribution of ochroptera appears more compatible with that of present species, and plumage pattern intermediate. However, apparent lack of interbreeding in areas of overlap between subspecies ochroptera of White-winged Trumpeter (Psophia leucoptera) and subspecies napensis of Grey-winged Trumpeter (Psophia crepitans) indicates that these two subspecies probably belong to separate species.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
napensis Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1873 - South-eastern Colombia through eastern Ecuador to north-eastern Peru, and extreme north-western Brazil (north of R Amazon/Solimões and mostly west of R Negro.
crepitans Linnaeus, 1758 - South-eastern Colombia through eastern and southern Venezuela to the Guianas and south to northern Brazil (north of R Amazon and east of R Negro).
ochroptera Pelzeln, 1857 - North-western Brazil (north of R Amazon/Solimões and west of R Negro). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Ochre-winged Trumpeter (Psophia ochroptera).
