Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Grey-winged Trumpeter (Psophia crepitans) and White-winged Trumpeter (Psophia leucoptera). Proposed subspecies interjecta differs only slightly from subspecies dextralis and obscura and adjoins their ranges and is generally thought to represent an intergradation between populations of these two subspecies.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
viridis Spix, 1825 - Central Brazil (south of R Amazon, between R Madeira and R Tapajós).
dextralis Conover, 1934 - East-central Brazil (south of R Amazon, between R Tapajós and R Tocantins). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Olive-winged Trumpeter (Psophia dextralis).
obscura Pelzeln, 1857 - North-eastern Brazil (south of R Amazon, in north-eastern Pará east of R Tocantins). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Black-winged Trumpeter (Psophia obscura).
interjecta Griscom & Greenway, 1937 - Eastern Brazil, south of the Amazon, between the Xingu and Tocantins rivers.
