Subspecies
African Olive-pigeon (Columba arquatrix), Cameroon Olive-pigeon (Columba sjostedti) and Sao Tome Olive-pigeon (Columba thomensis) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include sjostedti and thomensis as subspecies of African Olive-pigeon (Columba arquatrix).

Forms a superspecies with African Olive-pigeon (Columba arquatrix), Cameroon Olive-pigeon (Columba sjostedti) and Comoro Olive-pigeon (Columba pollenii), and all are sometimes considered conspecific. Asiatic Speckled Woodpigeon (Columba hodgsonii) may also belong within this superspecies.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Sao Tome Bronze-naped Pigeon (Columba malherbii) which is smaller and paler with metallic patches on neck and nape.
