Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Red-and-blue Lory (Eos histrio), Red Lory (Eos bornea), Blue-streaked Lory (Eos reticulata), Black-winged Lory (Eos cyanogenia) and Blue-eared Lory (Eos semilarvata).

Proposed subspecies atrocaerulea doubtfully valid, as based on juvenile birds; insularis is synonym of riciniata.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

riciniata (Bechstein, 1811) - Northern Moluccas, including Widi Is.
obiensis Rothschild, 1899 - Obi and Bisa in north-central Moluccas.
squamata (Boddaert, 1783) - Western Papuan Is and nearby Schildpad Is.
