Habitat loss through small-holder agricultural encroachment into primary forest and (illegal) commercial logging, trapping for cage-bird trade, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Violet-necked Lory (Eos squamata), Red Lory (Eos bornea), Blue-streaked Lory (Eos reticulata), Black-winged Lory (Eos cyanogenia) and Blue-eared Lory (Eos semilarvata).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

challengeri Salvadori, 1891 - Miangas I, north of Sulawesi.
talautensis Meyer, AB & Wiglesworth, 1894 - Talaud Is.
histrio (M�ller, 1776) - Sangihe I, Siau I and Ruang I.
