Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also rural gardens, pastureland and plantations. From 200 - 700 m.

Range (Guide)

Vanuatu (B) (NB).

North-central Vanuatu, on Espiritu Santo, Malo and Malakula.

Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 10,000 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habit desctruction due to logging and degradation by feral cattle and pigs.

Voice
A shrill, high-pitched 'teck', repeated 20 times or more, starting slowly, then speeding up and rising in pitch.

Subspecies
Genus often merged into Halcyon. Forms a superspecies with Blue-and-white Kingfisher (Todiramphus diops), Lazuli Kingfisher (Todiramphus lazuli), New Britain Kingfisher (Todiramphus albonotatus), Ultramarine Kingfisher (Todiramphus leucopygius) and Forest Kingfisher (Todiramphus macleayii).

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Collared Kingfisher (Todiramphus chloris) which is found in more open habitats and larger and pale turquoise-blue above with variable orange or rufous on supercilium, flanks and sometimes belly.
