Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat loss and degradation due to conversion to agriculture appears to be a threat.

Subspecies
Genus often merged into Halcyon. Forms a superspecies with Blue-and-white Kingfisher (Todiramphus diops), Lazuli Kingfisher (Todiramphus lazuli), Forest Kingfisher (Todiramphus macleayii), Ultramarine Kingfisher (Todiramphus leucopygius) and Vanuatu Kingfisher (Todiramphus farquhari).

No subspecies.
