Southern Moluccas, on Seram, Ambon and Haruku.

Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Habitat loss and degradation appears to be a threat.

Nest
In a hollow of an arboreal termite nest.

Subspecies
Genus often merged into Halcyon. Forms a superspecies with Blue-and-white Kingfisher (Todiramphus diops), Forest Kingfisher (Todiramphus macleayii), New Britain Kingfisher (Todiramphus albonotatus), Ultramarine Kingfisher (Todiramphus leucopygius) and Vanuatu Kingfisher (Todiramphus farquhari). Formerly considered conspecific with Blue-and-white Kingfisher (Todiramphus diops).

No subspecies.
