Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, dry forest. From sea-level - 2,000 m.
Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Venezuela.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with White-browed Guan (Penelope jacucaca ), Cauca Guan (Penelope perspicax ), White-winged Guan (Penelope albipennis ) and Dusky-legged Guan (Penelope obscura ). Penelope cristata is a synonym.
Has hybridized with Marail Guan (Penelope marail ), White-crested Guan (Penelope pileata ) and Rusty-margined Guan (Penelope superciliaris ) in captivity. Spix's Guan (Penelope jacquacu ) was formerly considered a subspecies of Crested Guan (Penelope purpurascens ).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
purpurascens Wagler, 1830 - North-western and north-eastern Mexico south to Honduras and Nicaragua.
aequatorialis Salvadori & Festa, 1900 - Southern Honduras and Nicaragua south to north-western Colombia and south-eastern Ecuador; possibly also to extreme northern Peru.
brunnescens Hellmayr & Conover, 1932 - Northern Colombia to eastern Venezuela.
