White-winged Guan (Penelope albipennis)

Extreme north-western Peru; recent records only from Lambayeque; historically, also occurred in Tumbes and Piura, where some populations may persist. Original range supposed to extend north to near border with Ecuador, and south to R Chicama, La Libertad. Might also be present in large swampy area bordering Gulf of Guayaquil, in south-western Ecuador.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 150 - 249 (2010) and decreasing.

Voice
A very deep, hoarse 'och..och...och', especially at dawn and during breeding season. A far-carrying, sharp 'cau�.cau�.cau'.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with White-browed Guan (Penelope jacucaca), Crested Guan (Penelope purpurascens), Cauca Guan (Penelope perspicax) and Dusky-legged Guan (Penelope obscura).

No subspecies.
