Subspecies
Has been considered conspecific with White-browed Guan (Penelope jacucaca). Forms superspecies with White-browed Guan (Penelope jacucaca), Crested Guan (Penelope purpurascens), White-winged Guan (Penelope albipennis) and Cauca Guan (Penelope perspicax).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

bronzina Hellmayr, 1914 - Eastern Brazil (Espiritu Santo to Santa Catarina).
obscura Temminck, 1815 - South-eastern Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina, Uruguay and extreme southern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul).
bridgesi Gray, GR, 1860 - Central Bolivia south to north-western Argentina, on eastern slope of Andes.
