Habitat
Understorey and middle storey forest edges in "terra firme" forest (with no flooding), transitional forest and "várzea" (seasonally flooded forest), as well as some tall secondary woodland. From sea-level - 1,300 m.

Brazil (B) (NB), Colombia (B) (NB), Guyana (B) (NB), Venezuela (B) (NB).

Subspecies
Hypocnemis cantator (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993; Stotz et al. 1996) has been split into Guianan Antwarbler (Hypocnemis cantator), Imeri Antwarbler (Hypocnemis flavescens), Peruvian Antwarbler (Hypocnemis peruviana), Yellow-breasted Antwarbler (Hypocnemis subflava), Rondonia Antwarbler (Hypocnemis ochrogyna) and Spix's Antwarbler (Hypocnemis striata) following SACC (2007).

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Guianan Antwarbler (Hypocnemis cantator).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • flavescens Sclater, PL, 1865   -  Southern Venezuela (western and southern Bolí­var, Amazonas), extreme north-western Amazonian Brazil (upper R Negro drainage and northern Roraima) and east-central Colombia (Guainí­a, Vaupés, northern Caquetá). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Imeri Antwarbler (Hypocnemis flavescens).
  • perflava Pinto, 1966   -  Central Roraima (northern Brazil).
