Subspecies
Saltator albicollis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Lesser Antillean Saltator (Saltator albicollis) and Streaked Saltator (Saltator striatipectus) following AOU (1998).

Affiliations of genus uncertain. Recent molecular-genetic analyses indicate that it does not belong with present family, and may be better placed with tanagers (Thraupidae). Formerly treated as conspecific with Lesser Antillean Saltator (Saltator albicollis), but analyses of mitochondrial DNA clearly indicate that genetic differentiation sufficient to support treatment as two separate species. In addition, has been suggested that subspecies may involve more than one species. Further study is needed. Also, in south-western Ecuador, adults on Puná I, which lies within range of subspecies flavidicollis, are streaked below (unlike flavidicollis) and greyish above (like nominate). May be worthy of taxonomic differentiation.

The following 10 subspecies are recognised:

  • furax Bangs & Penard, TE, 1919   -  South-western Costa Rica and western Panama (western Chiriquí).
  • isthmicus Sclater, PL, 1861   -  Mainland Panama, (except extreme western and east).
  • scotinus Wetmore, 1957   -  Coiba I and Coibita I, off southern Veraguas (south-western Panama).
  • melicus Wetmore, 1952   -  Taboga I, off southern Panamá (central Panama).
  • speratus Bangs & Penard, TE, 1919   -  Pearl Is (San Miguel, Saboga and Viveros), off southern Panama.
  • striatipectus Lafresnaye, 1847   -  Eastern Panama (Darién), and western Colombia south, west of Andes, to northern Ecuador.
  • perstriatus Parkes, 1959   -  North-eastern Colombia (Magdalena, north-eastern Bolívar and Norte de Santander) east through mountains of northern Venezuela to Sucre and Monagas; Trinidad.
  • flavidicollis Sclater, PL, 1860   -  Lowland western Ecuador and north-western Peru.
  • immaculatus von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1892   -  Arid coast of western Peru (Lambayeque south to Ica).
  • peruvianus Cory, 1916   -  Marañón drainage of south-eastern Ecuador (Zamora-Chinchipe) and north-eastern Peru (upper Marañón Valley in Cajamarca and La Libertad).
