Subspecies
Saltator albicollis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Lesser Antillean Saltator (Saltator albicollis) and Streaked Saltator (Saltator striatipectus) following AOU (1998).
Affiliations of genus uncertain. Recent molecular-genetic analyses indicate that it does not belong with present family, and may be better placed with tanagers (Thraupidae). Formerly treated as conspecific with Streaked Saltator (Saltator striatipectus), but analyses of mitochondrial DNA clearly indicate that genetic differentiation sufficient to support treatment as two separate species. Subspecies guadelupensis not always distinguishable from nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
guadelupensis Lafresnaye, 1844 - Guadeloupe and Dominica, in north-central Lesser Antilles.
albicollis Viellot, 1817 - Martinique and St Lucia, in central Lesser Antilles.
