Subspecies
Genetic data indicate that this species and Yellow-bellied Tanager (Tangara xanthogastra), Spotted Tanager (Tangara punctata), Dotted Tanager (Tangara varia) and Rufous-throated Tanager (Tangara rufigula) form a species group. Nominate subspecies isolated; the possibility that the other subspecies might merit treatment as a separate species may be worth investigating. Taxonomic status of chrysophrys may likewise deserve research.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • eusticta Todd, 1912   -  Costa Rica (from Alajuela and, on Pacific slope, from San José) east to Panama (Caribbean slope) and extreme western Colombia (Cerro Tacarcuna, in extreme north-western Chocó).
  • tolimae Chapman, 1914   -  Eastern slope of central Andes of Colombia (south to Tolima).
  • bogotensis Hellmayr & Seilern, 1912   -  Sierra de Perijá, Andes of Venezuela (from Lara south to Táchira), and adjacent eastern Andes of Colombia (western slope from Norte de Santander south to Cundinamarca, Macarena Mts, and to western Caquetá and eastern Cauca, possibly also Nariño; probably throughout eastern slope, but records sparse).
  • chrysophrys (Sclater, PL, 1851)   -  Northern and southern Venezuela (Sierra San Luis, in Falcón, and coastal cordilleras from Yaracuy east to Sucre and Monagas. Also locally in mountains of Amazonas and Bolívar) and extreme north-western Brazil (Sierra de Curupira).
  • trinitatis Todd, 1912   -  Northern Trinidad.
  • guttata (Cabanis, 1850)   -  South-eastern Venezuela (south-eastern Bolívar east of R Caroní), adjacent extreme northern Brazil (Cerro Uei-tepui), and locally in the Guianas.
