Subspecies
Genetic data indicate that this species and Spotted Tanager (Tangara punctata), Speckled Tanager (Tangara guttata), Dotted Tanager (Tangara varia) and Rufous-throated Tanager (Tangara rufigula) form a species group. Highland subspecies phelpsi differs in numerous ways from nominate, and may merit separate species status.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
xanthogastra (Sclater, 1851) - Eastern Colombia (from Meta and Vaupés) east to southern Venezuela (southern Amazonas and south-western Bolívar), south to eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, western Brazil (east to R Negro, middle R Juruá and upper R Purús), and northern Bolivia (south to Cochabamba).
phelpsi Zimmer, JT, 1943 - Southern Venezuela in northern Amazonas and northern and eastern Bolívar (from lower R Caura east to Uei-tepui, on Brazilian border). Also eastern Guyana.
