Unknown to Costa Rica.
Breeds in central Texas (mainly Edwards Plateau and the Balcones Escarpment), in southern USA. Migrates to southern Mexico (Chiapas), Guatemala, Honduras and north-western Nicaragua.

Status EN
Habitat destruction, degradation and fragmentation due to clearance for land development and agriculture is the main threat.

Song is a variable and buzzy 'zee zee zeedee-zee'.
Similar Species
Black-throated Green Warbler (Setophaga virens), but first-winter female of Golden-cheeked Warbler (Setophaga chrysoparia) has more distinct, dark eye-stripe, no auricular patch, darker, less olive and usually faintly streaked blackish upperparts and no yellow in vent.
