Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 1,200 - 3,000 m.

Range (Guide)
El Salvador (NB), Guatemala (NB), Honduras (NB), Mexico (NB), Nicaragua (NB), USA (B).

Vagrant to Panama (NB) (P), Virgin Islands (U.S.).

Unknown to Costa Rica.

Breeds in central Texas (mainly Edwards Plateau and the Balcones Escarpment), in southern USA. Migrates to southern Mexico (Chiapas), Guatemala, Honduras and north-western Nicaragua.
 
Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 21,000 (2010) and decreasing.

Status EN
Habitat destruction, degradation and fragmentation due to clearance for land development and agriculture is the main threat.

Song is a variable and buzzy 'zee zee zeedee-zee'.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Forms a superspecies with Black-throated Green Warbler (Setophaga virens), Townsend's Warbler (Setophaga townsendi) and Hermit Warbler (Setophaga occidentalis), and Black-throated Grey Warbler (Setophaga nigrescens) is closely related to this group. Probably the sister-species of Black-throated Green Warbler (Setophaga virens) and has occasionally been considered conspecific.

Similar Species
Black-throated Green Warbler (Setophaga virens), but first-winter female of Golden-cheeked Warbler (Setophaga chrysoparia) has more distinct, dark eye-stripe, no auricular patch, darker, less olive and usually faintly streaked blackish upperparts and no yellow in vent.
