Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, temperate forest. From 1,500 - 3,000 m.

Range (Guide)
El Salvador (NB), Honduras (NB), Mexico (NB), Nicaragua (NB), USA (B).

Vagrant to Belize, Panama.

Breeds in western USA from coastal mountains of southern Washington south to central and southern California (including Sierra Nevada). Migrates to non-breeding grounds mainly from northern Mexico south to northern Nicaragua, casually south to Costa Rica; also in smaller numbers to coastal southern California.

Estimated population is 2,400,000 (2010).

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Forms a superspecies with Golden-cheeked Warbler (Setophaga chrysoparia), Black-throated Green Warbler (Setophaga virens) and Townsend's Warbler (Setophaga townsendi), and Black-throated Grey Warbler (Setophaga nigrescens) closely related to this group. Probably the sister-species of Townsend's Warbler (Setophaga townsendi) and has occasionally been considered conspecific. Hybridizes frequently with Townsend's Warbler (Setophaga townsendi) (producing fertile young). Has hybridized with Black-throated Grey Warbler (Setophaga nigrescens).
