Subspecies
No subspecies.
Tanzanian Masked Weaver (Ploceus reichardi) and Lufira Masked Weaver (Ploceus ruweti) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include ruweti as a subspecies of Tanzanian Masked Weaver (Ploceus reichardi).
Has been thought to form a superspecies, or even to be conspecific, with Southern Masked Weaver (Ploceus velatus), Vitelline Masked Weaver (Ploceus vitellinus), Lufira Masked Weaver (Ploceus ruweti) and Katanga Masked Weaver (Ploceus katangae), but molecular data suggest that it is close only to Katanga Masked Weaver (Ploceus katangae).
