Subspecies
Southern Masked Weaver (Ploceus velatus), Vitelline Masked Weaver (Ploceus vitellinus) and Katanga Masked Weaver (Ploceus katangae) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include vitellinus and katangae as subspecies of Southern Masked Weaver (Ploceus velatus).

Has been thought to form a superspecies, or even to be conspecific, with Southern Masked Weaver (Ploceus velatus), Vitelline Masked Weaver (Ploceus vitellinus), Tanzanian Masked Weaver (Ploceus reichardi) and Lufira Masked Weaver (Ploceus ruweti). Formerly, often treated as a subspecies of Southern Masked Weaver (Ploceus velatus). Molecular data suggest that it is close only Tanzanian Masked Weaver (Ploceus reichardi). Subspecies upembae sometimes considered to represent a separate species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • upembae (Verheyen, 1953)   -  South-eastern DRCongo (R Lualaba). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Upemba Masked Weaver (Ploceus upembae).
  • katangae (Verheyen, 1947)   -  South-eastern DRCongo (R Luapula) and northern and western sectors of north-eastern Zambia.
