Subspecies
Long-billed Pipit (Anthus similis), Bannerman's Pipit (Anthus bannermani), Woodland Pipit (Anthus nyassae) and southern populations previously ascribed to Jackson's Pipit (Anthus latistriatus) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Anthus similis following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993). The northern populations of Jackson's Pipit (Anthus latistriatus) are lumped with Anthus richardi also following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).

Previously regarded as conspecific with Long-billed Pipit (Anthus similis). Subspecies winterbottomi of African Pipit (Anthus cinnamomeus) has been treated by some authors as a synonym of nominate subspecies of present species. Subspecies chersophilus possibly inseparable from schoutedeni, and both possibly better merged with nominate.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • schoutedeni Chapin, 1937   -  South-eastern Gabon and southern PRCongo east to southern DRCongo, south to south-central and south-eastern Angola.
  • nyassae (Neumann, 1906)   -  Zambia, south-western and south-eastern Tanzania, Malawi and north-western Mozambique.
  • chersophilus Clancey, 1989   -  North-eastern Namibia and northern Botswana.
  • frondicolus Clancey, 1964   -  Zimbabwe and adjacent southern Mozambique.
