Vagrant to Cyprus, Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar.

Has been thought to form a superspecies with Tawny Pipit (Anthus campestris). Previously regarded as conspecific with Woodland Pipit (Anthus nyassae). Subspecies winterbottomi of African Pipit (Anthus cinnamomeus) has sometimes been treated as a subspecies of Long-billed Pipit (Anthus similis). Subspecies bannermani considered a separate species, possibly closer to Jackson's Pipit (Anthus latistriatus), by some authors. Taxonomy complex, and listed ranges somewhat tentative; revision required. Subspecies nivescens is possibly inseparable from arabicus, and primarius is sometimes merged with nicholsoni. Other described subspecies are josensis (from central Nigeria) and chapini (Cameroon), both included within bannermani; neumannianus (Ethiopia) and chyuluensis (Chyulu Hills, in Kenya), included in hararensis; moco (west-central Angola) and hallae (Uganda), inseparable from dewittei; and cockburniae (Nilgiris), synonymous with nominate.

The following 21 subspecies are recognised:

• asbenaicus Rothschild, 1920   -  Southern Sahara in central and eastern Mali and central Niger.
• bannermani Bates, 1930   -  Mountains of south-western Mali, Guinea, Sierra Leone and northern Liberia east to central and south-eastern Nigeria and western Cameroon. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Bannerman's Pipit (Anthus bannermani).
• captus Hartert, 1905   -  Lebanon, Syria, Israel, Palestine and western Jordan.
• jebelmarrae Lynes, 1920   -  Mountains of western and central Sudan.
• nivescens Reichenow, 1905   -  Mountains of south-eastern Egypt (Gebel Elba), and from hills of Red Sea coast in north-eastern Sudan and Eritrea south to mountains in north-western Somalia and northern Kenya.
• hararensis Neumann, 1906   -  Highlands of Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania.
• dewittei Chapin, 1937   -  Highlands of eastern and south-eastern DRCongo, south-western Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and central Angola (Mt Moco, in Huambo).
• palliditinctus Clancey, 1956   -  Extreme south-western Angola and north-western Namibia. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Nicholson's Pipit (Anthus nicholsoni).
• leucocraspedon Reichenow, 1915   -  Western and southern Namibia and south-western South Africa (western northern Cape, north-western western Cape). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Nicholson's Pipit (Anthus nicholsoni).
• nicholsoni Sharpe, 1884   -  South-eastern Botswana and north-eastern South Africa (Northern Province south to Free State). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Nicholson's Pipit (Anthus nicholsoni).
• petricolus Clancey, 1956   -  Lesotho and eastern South Africa. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Nicholson's Pipit (Anthus nicholsoni).
• primarius Clancey, 1990   -  Southern South Africa (southern western Cape east to northern eastern Cape). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Nicholson's Pipit (Anthus nicholsoni).
• arabicus Hartert, 1917   -  South-western, southern and south-eastern Arabian Peninsula.
• sokotrae Hartert, 1917   -  Socotra I.
• decaptus Meinertzhagen, R, 1920   -  Southern Iran (Zagros Mts) east to western Pakistan (Baluchistan). Winters south to north-western India.
• jerdoni Finsch, 1870   -  Breeds eastern Afghanistan eastern in Himalayas to western Nepal. Winters south to north-central India and Bangladesh.
• similis Jerdon, 1840   -  Peninsular India from Bombay south to Karnataka and western Tamil Nadu (Nilgiri and Palni Hills).
• travancoriensis Ripley, 1953   -  South-western India (Kerala-western Tamil Nadu border, from Palni Hills south to Ashambu Hills).
• yamethini Hall, BP, 1957   -  Central Myanmar.
• chyuluensis van Someren, 1939   -  Kenya and northern Tanzania.
• moco Traylor, 1962   -  Central Angola.
