Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry grassland and shrubland, high altitude shrubland, dry savanna, urban areas, rural gardens, arable land. From sea-level - 4,500 m.

Range (Guide)

Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia.

Coastal and south-eastern Sudan (southern from Port Sudan), Eritrea, Ethiopia, northern Somalia and northern Kenya.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Northern Grey-headed Sparrow (Passer griseus), Swainson's Sparrow (Passer swainsonii), Parrot-billed Sparrow (Passer gongonensis) and Swahili Sparrow (Passer suahelicus) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include swainsonii, gongonensis and suahelicus as subspecies of Northern Grey-headed Sparrow (Passer griseus).

Forms a superspecies with Northern Grey-headed Sparrow (Passer griseus), Parrot-billed Sparrow (Passer gongonensis), Swahili Sparrow (Passer suahelicus) and Southern Grey-headed Sparrow (Passer diffusus). All are often treated as conspecific.
