Subspecies
Northern Grey-headed Sparrow (Passer griseus ), Swainson's Sparrow (Passer swainsonii ), Parrot-billed Sparrow (Passer gongonensis ) and Swahili Sparrow (Passer suahelicus ) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include swainsonii , gongonensis and suahelicus as subspecies of Northern Grey-headed Sparrow (Passer griseus ).
Forms a superspecies with Swainson's Sparrow (Passer swainsonii ), Parrot-billed Sparrow (Passer gongonensis ), Swahili Sparrow (Passer suahelicus ) and Southern Grey-headed Sparrow (Passer diffusus ). All are often treated as conspecific.
Subspecies mosambicus of Southern Grey-headed Sparrow (Passer diffusus ) considered by some authors to be asubspecies of Northern Grey-headed Sparrow (Passer griseus ).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
laeneni Niethammer, 1955 - Mali and Burkina Faso east to western Sudan, south to northern Cameroon.
griseus (Vieillot, 1817) - Senegal and southern Mauritania east to Ivory Coast and to southern Sudan, south to northern Gabon and extreme northern Central African Republic. Also Bioko I (Fernandóo Po).
ugandae Reichenow, 1904 - Northern Ethiopia, northern Eritrea and south-eastern Sudan south to Angola, extreme northern Namibia, Zambia, Malawi, central and north-eastern Tanzania and northern and north-eastern Zimbabwe.
