Subspecies

Forms a superspecies with Lovely Sunbird (Aethopyga shelleyi), previously treated as conspecific. It has been suggested that Elegant Sunbird (Aethopyga duyvenbodei) may be part of this superspecies. Subspecies minuta not well differentiated, and validity has been questioned.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
flavipectus Ogilvie-Grant, 1894 - Northern Luzon, in northern Philippines.
minuta Bourns & Worcester, 1894 - Southern and central Luzon, Polillo Is, Mindoro and Marinduque.
