Subspecies
No subspecies.

Aethopyga shelleyi (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Lovely Sunbird (Aethopyga shelleyi) and Handsome Sunbird (Aethopyga bella) following Mann (2002).

Forms a superspecies with Handsome Sunbird (Aethopyga bella), previously treated as conspecific. It has been suggested that Elegant Sunbird (Aethopyga duyvenbodei) may be part of this superspecies.
