Subspecies
Garrulax maesi (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Grey Laughingthrush (Garrulax maesi) and Rufous-cheeked Laughingthrush (Garrulax castanotis) following Collar (2006).

Formerly treated as conspecific with Grey Laughingthrush (Garrulax maesi).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

varennei (Delacour, 1926) - Eastern Tonkin (Mt Ba Vi) and northern and central Annam, in Vietnam, and adjacent eastern Laos.
castanotis (Ogilvie-Grant, 1899) - Hainan I (China).
