South-eastern China (south-central Sichuan, extreme north-eastern and south-eastern Yunnan, northern and south-eastern Guizhou, Guangxi, northern Guangdong) and northern Vietnam (north-western and eastern Tonkin).

Subspecies
Garrulax maesi (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Grey Laughingthrush (Garrulax maesi) and Rufous-cheeked Laughingthrush (Garrulax castanotis) following Collar (2006).
Formerly treated as conspecific with Rufous-cheeked Laughingthrush (Garrulax castanotis). Birds in north-eastern part of range described as a geographical subspecies, grahami, but inseparable from individuals elsewhere in species' range.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
grahami (Riley, 1922) - South-western China (south-western Sichuan to south-eastern Guangxi and north-eastern Yunnan).
maesi (Oustalet, 1890) - Tibet to central,s China and northern Vietnam.
