Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Louisiade White-eye (Zosterops griseotinctus), Rennell White-eye (Zosterops rennellianus), Vella Lavella White-eye (Zosterops vellalavella), Ranongga White-eye (Zosterops splendidus) and Gizo White-eye (Zosterops luteirostris), and possibly Kolombangara White-eye (Zosterops murphyi). Species has been listed as Grey-throated White-eye (Zosterops rendovae), but original description now seen clearly to be based on specimens from San Cristobal, not Rendova, and thus applicable to a different species. Geographical variation rather well marked, including vocal differentiation. Subspecies possibly better treated as separate species.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
kulambangrae Rothschild & Hartert, 1901 - New Georgia Group (Kolombangara, Vonavona, Kohinggo, New Georgia, Vangunu and Nggatokae), in west-central Solomon Is.
paradoxus Mees, 1955 - Rendova, in southern New Georgia Group. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Dark-eyed White-eye (Zosterops tetiparius).
tetiparius Murphy, 1929 - Tetepare, in southern New Georgia Group. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Dark-eyed White-eye (Zosterops tetiparius).
