Subspecies
African Yellow White-eye (Zosterops senegalensis) and Pemba White-eye (Zosterops vaughani) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include vaughani as a subspecies of African Yellow White-eye (Zosterops senegalensis).
Forms a superspecies and sometimes regarded as conspecific with Pemba White-eye (Zosterops vaughani). Both sometimes suggested as being part of a larger superspecies that includes also Abyssinian White-eye (Zosterops abyssinicus), Orange River White-eye (Zosterops pallidus) and Ethiopian White-eye (Zosterops poliogastrus), or, more unlikely, a close relationship to subspecies kirki of Madagascar White-eye (Zosterops maderaspatanus) proposed. Subspecies gerhardi and jacksoni have in the past been included in Ethiopian White-eye (Zosterops poliogastrus); jacksoni sometimes considered a separate species. Subspecies stenocricotus differs vocally from others and may merit full species status. Subspecies intergrade widely, e.g. nominate intergrades with demeryi, stenicricotus and stuhlmanni, and quanzae with kasaicus, heinrichi and anderssoni, etc. Described subspecies phyllicus from western Cameroon (Tatum, in Bamenda Highlands) and poensis from Bioko I (in Gulf of Guinea) synonymized with stenocricotus.
The following 14 subspecies are recognised:

demeryi Büttikofer, 1890 - Sierra Leone, Liberia and Ivory Coast.
