Subspecies
Buff-throated Apalis (Apalis rufogularis) and Kungwe Apalis (Apalis argentea) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993), who include argentea as a subspecies of Buff-throated Apalis (Apalis rufogularis).
Forms a superspecies with Sharpe's Apalis (Apalis sharpii), Kungwe Apalis (Apalis argentea) and Karamoja Apalis (Apalis karamojae). Taxonomy confused by considerable variation in plumage. Status of apparently isolated Angolan population (angolensis and brauni) uncertain.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
sanderi Serle, 1951 - Southern Benin and central and south-western Nigeria (Jos Plateau and coastal forest east to R Niger).
rufogularis (Fraser, 1843) - Eastern Nigeria east to Central African Republic, south to Gabon and PRCongo. Also Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
