Subspecies
Buff-throated Apalis (Apalis rufogularis) and Kungwe Apalis (Apalis argentea) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993), who include argentea as a subspecies of Buff-throated Apalis (Apalis rufogularis).

Forms a superspecies with Sharpe's Apalis (Apalis sharpii), Buff-throated Apalis (Apalis rufogularis) and Karamoja Apalis (Apalis karamojae). Often treated as a subspecies of Buff-throated Apalis (Apalis rufogularis).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

eidos Moreau, 1941 - Locally in eastern DRCongo (Idjwi I, in L Kivu), Rwanda (Nyungwe Forest) and Burundi (Kibira and Bururi Forests).
argentea Moreau, 1941 - Mt Mahale, in western Tanzania.
