Subspecies
Sometimes considered to include Santa Marta Wren (Troglodytes monticola), Ochraceous Wren (Troglodytes ochraceus), Rufous-browed Wren (Troglodytes rufociliatus) and Tepui Wren (Troglodytes rufulus) as subspecies. However, recent DNA work strongly indicates that last three of those, at least, are distinct from present species.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • solitarius Todd, 1912   -  Mountains of Colombia (except extreme south) and western Venezuela (Perijá Mts and Andes southern from southern Lara).
  • solstitialis Sclater, 1859   -  Extreme southern Colombia south to north-western Peru.
  • macrourus von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1902   -  Eastern slope of Peru southern from San Martín.
  • frater Sharpe, 1882   -  Extreme south-eastern Peru (Puno) and Bolivia.
  • auricularis Cabanis, 1883   -  North-western Argentina (south to Tucumán).
