Frequently treated as a subspecies of Mountain Wren (Troglodytes solstitialis), although morphologically closer to Ochraceous Wren (Troglodytes ochraceus). Relationships with other montane congeners of Central and South America uncertain, and no DNA analysis yet undertaken.
