Subspecies
Frequently regarded as conspecific with Mountain Wren (Troglodytes solstitialis). However, recent DNA work strongly indicates that it is a distinct species, and closer to the House Wren (Troglodytes aedon) superspecies than to other members of the genus in Central and South America.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
chiapensis Brodkorb, 1943 - High mountains of Chiapas, in southern Mexico.
rufociliatus Sharpe, 1881 - Eastern Guatemala and northern El Salvador.
nannoides Dickey & van Rossem, 1929 - Volcán Santa Ana, in El Salvador.
rehni Stone, 1932 - Mountains of Honduras and north-western Nicaragua.
