Subspecies
Troglodytes aedon (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Southern House Wren (Troglodytes musculus) and Cobb's Wren (Troglodytes cobbi) following Woods (1993), contra SACC (2005), pending the outcome of investigation into the taxonomy of this form by SACC. Troglodytes beani and Troglodytes martinicensis, provisionally split from Southern House Wren (Troglodytes musculus) by Stotz et al. (1996), have been lumped with Southern House Wren (Troglodytes musculus) following SACC (2005).

Forms a superspecies with Brown-throated Wren (Troglodytes brunneicollis), Southern House Wren (Troglodytes musculus), Clarion Wren (Troglodytes tanneri), Cozumel Wren (Troglodytes beani) and Cobb's Wren (Troglodytes cobbi) and all have often been treated as conspecific, as suggested by field observations, but recent DNA analyses indicate that present species and first two are three separate species. The others, isolated on islands, likely also to be distinct. Intergrades with Brown-throated Wren (Troglodytes brunneicollis) in southern Arizona. Birds breeding in eastern part of range (from Michigan and Quebec south to Kentucky and West Virginia) described as subspecies baldwini, but poorly differentiated from, and therefore merged with, nominate. Species name domesticus has priority, but use of aedon almost universal; this has led to the proposal that the name domesticus be officially suppressed in order to favour stability in nomenclature.
