Estimated population is unknown (2011).
Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with House Wren (Troglodytes aedon), Southern House Wren (Troglodytes musculus), Clarion Wren (Troglodytes tanneri), Cozumel Wren (Troglodytes beani) and Cobb's Wren (Troglodytes cobbi) and all have often been treated as conspecific, as suggested by field observations, but recent DNA analyses indicate that present species and first two are three separate species. The others, isolated on islands, likely also to be distinct. Intergrades with House Wren (Troglodytes aedon) in southern Arizona. Birds from north-central Mexico were separated as subspecies compositus, but apparently on basis of merely individual variation.
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- cahooni Brewster, 1888 - Southern USA (southern Arizona) and central Mexico (south to Zacatecas and Michoacán). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
- brunneicollis P. L. Sclater, 1858 - Eastern Mexico from San Luis Potosí and Hidalgo south to Oaxaca. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
- nitidus Nelson, 1903 - Mt Zempoaltepec, in Oaxaca. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).
