Habitat
Naturally patchy limestone outcrops in steep hilly country covered by lowland evergreen and semi-evergreen forest, shade coffee plantations and adjacent to quarrying operations. From 75 - 1,000 m.
South-western Veracruz, extreme eastern Puebla and extreme northern Oaxaca, in south-central Mexico.

Estimated population is 20,000 - 49,999 (2012).
Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation through expansion of limestone-quarrying and encroaching cultivation and cattle ranches, is the main threat.

Hylorchilus sumichrasti (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Sumichrast's Wren (Hylorchilus sumichrasti) and Nava's Wren (Hylorchilus navai) following AOU (1998).
Has been included in genus Catherpes. Formerly treated as conspecific with Nava's Wren (Hylorchilus navai), but the two are quite distinct in plumage and, especially, in vocalizations.
