Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Cote dIvoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Sudan, Togo, Uganda.

Southern Mauritania and Mali east to Sudan, western Ethiopia, north-eastern Uganda and north-western Kenya.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Buff-breasted Wheatear (Oenanthe bottae) and Heuglin's Wheatear (Oenanthe heuglinii) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are given specific status contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).

May form a superspecies with Isabelline Wheatear (Oenanthe isabellina) and Buff-breasted Wheatear (Oenanthe bottae). All sometimes considered conspecific. Commonly treated as conspecific with Buff-breasted Wheatear (Oenanthe bottae), but geographical break between the two abrupt, and they differ in plumage and particularly in size, as well as in habitat and, reputedly, behaviour.

Proposed subspecies campicolina (described from Cameroon) considered unwarranted.
