Subspecies
Buff-breasted Wheatear (Oenanthe bottae) and Heuglin's Wheatear (Oenanthe heuglinii) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are given specific status contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).
May form a superspecies with Isabelline Wheatear (Oenanthe isabellina) and Heuglin's Wheatear (Oenanthe heuglinii). All sometimes considered conspecific. Commonly treated as conspecific with Heuglin's Wheatear (Oenanthe heuglinii), but geographical break between the two abrupt, and they differ in plumage and particularly in size, as well as in habitat and, reputedly, behaviour.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
bottae (Bonaparte, 1854) - Highlands of south-western Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
frenata (Heuglin, 1869) - Highlands of Eritrea and Ethiopia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Rusty-breasted Wheatear (Oenanthe frenata).
