Muscicapa - ?: dauurica - from Dauria, a region of south-eastern Siberia east of Lake Baikal bordering Mongolia and Manchuria

Abundance (Guide)
R - V

Rare, vagrant.

Habitat
Primary and secondary lowland dipterocarp forest, open woodland and cultivated areas. From sea-level - 230 m, migrants to 1,600 m.

Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China (mainland) (B), Hong Kong (China), India (B), Indonesia, Japan (B), Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia (B), Myanmar (B), Nepal (B), North Korea (B), Philippines, Russia (Asian) (B), Russia (Central Asian) (B), Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan (China), Tajikistan, Thailand (B), USA, Vietnam (B).

Vagrant to Denmark, Finland, Greece, Sweden.

Habits
Usually solitary. Arboreal insectivore, foraging mostly in mid-storey from a prominent perch.

Voice
A sharp 'chi' or loud 'seet seet'. Sometimes a sibilant 'tit-tit-tit'. Song is a complex, sweet 'chi jo chi-chi-chi cho-chu-chu-chu'. A simple, melodic courtship song.

Breeding Season (Guide)
Does not breed in Australia. Breeds in Japan, eastern Siberia and the Himalayas.

4. Incubation: by female.

Subspecies
Probably forms a superspecies with Ashy-breasted Flycatcher (Muscicapa randi) and Sumba Brown Flycatcher (Muscicapa segregata). Previously considered conspecific with Ashy-breasted Flycatcher (Muscicapa randi) and Sumba Brown Flycatcher (Muscicapa segregata).

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • dauurica Pallas, 1811   -  Breeds central Siberia and south-eastern Russia (east to Amurland and Ussuriland), northern Mongolia, north-eastern China, northern Korea, Sakhalin I, southern Kuril Is and Japan. Non-breeding southern China (Yunnan, Guangdong, Hainan), south-eastern Asia (to western Myanmar), Philippines and Greater Sundas.
  • poonensis Sykes, 1832   -  Breeds north-western Pakistan (Murree Hills) and Himalayan foothills east to eastern Nepal, also central and southern India (Vindhya and Satpura Ranges, western Ghats, possibly also eastern Ghats). Non-breeding peninsular India (principally south of Vindhya Range), Sri Lanka Andaman Is and Nicobar Is.
  • williamsoni Deignan, 1957   -  Southern Myanmar, southern Thailand, northern peninsular Malaysia. Also north-eastern Borneo. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Brown-streaked Flycatcher (Muscicapa williamsoni).
  • siamensis (Gyldenstolpe, 1916)   -  Southern Myanmar (northern Tenasserim), north-western Thailand and southern Vietnam (southern Annam, Cochinchina).
  • umbrosa Wells, 1982   -  North-eastern Borneo. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Brown-streaked Flycatcher (Muscicapa williamsoni).
