Primary and secondary lowland dipterocarp forest, plantations, rural gardens.

Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand.

Habits
Usually solitary. Arboreal insectivore, foraging mostly in mid-storey from a prominent perch.

Voice
A sharp 'chi' or loud 'seet seet'. Song is a complex, sweet 'chi jo chi-chi-chi cho-chu-chu-chu'. A simple, melodic courtship song.

4. Incubation: by female.

Subspecies
Not recognised as a species by BirdLife International. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Asian Brown Flycatcher (Muscicapa dauurica).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • williamsoni Deigan, 1957   -  Southern Myanmar, southern Thailand, northern peninsular Malaysia. Also north-eastern Borneo. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Asian Brown Flycatcher (Muscicapa dauurica).
  • umbrosa Wells, DR, 1982   -  North-eastern Borneo. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Asian Brown Flycatcher (Muscicapa dauurica).
