Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical mangroves, heavily degraded former forest, plantations.
New Caledonia, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu.

Subspecies
Closely related to and often considered to form a superspecies with Leaden Flycatcher (Myiagra rubecula), Steel-blue Flycatcher (Myiagra ferrocyanea), Makira Flycatcher (Myiagra cervinicauda), Vanikoro Flycatcher (Myiagra vanikorensis) and Samoan Flycatcher (Myiagra albiventris).
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
- occidentalis Mayr, 1931 - Rennell, in south-eastern Solomon Is.
- marinae Salomonsen, 1934 - Northern and central Vanuatu.
- melanura Gray, GR, 1860 - Southern Vanuatu.
- viridinitens Gray, GR, 1859 - Loyalty Is.
- caledonica Bonaparte, 1857 - New Caledonia (Grande Terre).
